Being an army officer is a highly demanding job. You will be likely to face extremely dangerous situations in combat zones, and will have significant responsibilities for both the completion of a mission and for the lives of the soldiers under your command. Army officers need to be calm and composed, as well as able to think on their feet and quickly adjust to changing circumstances. While not all army officers will need to be on the frontline, it is highly likely that you will be sent to a variety of different conflict zones during your career. Army officers need to be physically fit and able to cope with less than ideal conditions for extended periods of time.

Some officer roles in the Army will be a 9am to 5pm job, whereas other roles require that you work long and antisocial hours.

How much does an Army officer get paid?

There are many different rankings in the Army, meaning that there are a lot of different salaries for different roles. A starting salary for a private is around £17,582 per annum, raising to £32,329 for lieutenant ranking.

A captain is likely to earn between £40,000 and £47,598, and a major can earn between £50,417 and £60,381. The highest ranking in the army, brigadier-general can earn in excess of £102,159.

What qualifications does an Army officer need?

The education requirements for this job are the minimum of 5 GCSEs at grades 9 to 4 (A* to C) and 2 A-levels. Plus, you will need to be aged between 16 and 33, and a national of the UK or Ireland. You will need a degree for some roles in the RAF.
