What does a Farm worker do?

Depending on the type of farm they work on and the time of year, a farm worker's duties will vary but may include the following:

Ploughing fields, sowing seeds, spreading fertiliser, crop spraying and harvesting
Working with animals (transporting, milking, feeding, mucking out and caring for sick or newborn livestock)
Cleaning and disinfecting livestock pens, cages, yards, and hutches
Moving shrubs, plants and trees with wheelbarrows or tractors
Irrigating farm soil and maintaining ditches or pipes and pumps
Operating and servicing farm machinery
Harvesting and inspecting crops by hand
Examining animals to detect symptoms of illness or injury
Maintaining and cleaning farm buildings and machinery
Using brands, tags, or tattoos to mark livestock to identify ownership and grade
Laying and trimming hedges
Administering vaccines to protect animals from diseases
Erecting and mending fences
Digging and maintaining ditches

Skills & interests required for a Farm worker

Most farm workers will be expected to be able to operate complicated and potentially dangerous machinery on a daily basis - farm workers will need to be highly safety conscious! They will also likely need to be physically fit and capable of working long hours outdoors in all conditions.

What hours does a Farm worker typically do?

Farm workers can be expected to work early mornings, evenings and weekends and they will usually work at minimum of 39 hours a week. Overtime may also be necessary during busy harvest periods, but you will be paid for this.
