Helping you find a career in the fashion model industry

The requirements for a fashion model are quite different to other roles because the physical appearance determines whether someone has potential rather than their academic achievements. There are many types of model, ranging from retail to catwalk. Each has its own physical preference. Usually, catwalk models are tall and well-proportioned with healthy hair and skin. However, quirky features and an unusual face can work in a model's favour - such as Cara Delevingne's thick eyebrows and Lindsey Wixson's chin.

Fashion brands targeted at certain audiences (such as plus size) will have different preferences. Models usually sign with agencies who find them work. However, in recent years the ‘Instagram model' role has been created, which lets social media influencers with a certain amount of following advertise clothing for a fee.

          • Posing in designers' clothes for magazine covers
          • Creating and maintaining a portfolio of work
          • Managing a strong public image
          • Maintaining a strong social media image (models like Kendall Jenner, Gigi Hadid and Bella Hadid have been branded ‘Instagram models' for winning their modelling careers because of their strong Instagram following)
          • Travelling overseas to attend castings and go-sees (job interviews)
          • Working closely with photographers, hairstylists and make-up artists
          • Researching the products being promoted
          • Taking direction from photographers
          • Delivering lines in TV ads
          • Offering creative suggestions for makeup, hairstyle and poses
Skills & interests required for a Fashion model

As a fashion model you'll need to be sociable, and have a knack for self-promotion. You'll have to be able to interact with large number of photographers, fashion designers and agents, and maintain a strong sense of style and personal grooming - especially as high-paid models are photographed daily by paparazzi and are expected to uphold brand image.

What hours does a Fashion model typically do?

Fashion models tend to have unpredictable and irregular working hours. Models need to spend hours in castings and in shoots.

What environment is a Fashion model based in?

The work base depends on the project - modelling can take place at fashion show venues, exhibitions, showrooms, stores and photographic studios across the world.

How much does a Fashion model travel?

This role involves extensive travelling to overseas castings, fashion shows and photo shoots.

How much does a Fashion model get paid?

Since models are self-employed, they will need to manage their own finances.

Models are typically signed to agencies. Rates can vary from around £50 to £1,000 for a booking depending on the model, their reputation, social media following and previous campaign successes.

A fashion model can earn between £10,000 to £30,000 per annum depending on the hours worked. Of course, high profile models have earnings that vastly outway this - often into the millions.

What qualifications does a Fashion model need?

There are no qualifications needed for this, only a model face and figure.

The height requirements for a female model is a minimum 5ft 8inch tall with a 34-24-34 bust, waist and hip ratio. Male models are expected to be 6ft tall, chest 40 and inside leg 33 inches.

The first thing to do is send photographs along with measurements to modelling agencies through their online application forms. The agency will help you create photographs, index cards, and a portfolio as well as giving you representation of their website.
