Skills & interests required for a Mechanic

Mechanics need to be passionate about motor vehicles and their engines. They also need to be good with numbers and able to explain complicated mechanical problems to their customers, most of whom will not be experts!

What hours does a Mechanic typically do?

38-45 hours a week is typical for a mechanic but working to deadlines can often extend these hours. Mechanics can also work on a call-out basis for emergency repairs, which can require working nights and weekends on a shift-basis.

What environment is a Mechanic based in?

Typically a garage but you may need to attend call outs across a broad geographical area.

How much does a Mechanic travel?

There may be a requirement for you to cover significant ground on a daily basis in a call-out van. If working in motor sports you may be required to travel internationally on a regular basis as part of a team.

How much does a Mechanic get paid?

Starting salaries around £18,000 per annum can grow with experience to as much as £35,000 for experienced mechanics. Motorsports workers may earn significantly higher salaries, although roles in the industry are highly prized and difficult to secure.

What qualifications does a Mechanic need?
