        An actor connects a character or situation to an audience through speech and body language. This is usually done so by interpreting the work of a writer with the support of a director. This can be done through a variety of mediums, e.g. theatre, TV or radio.

        What does an Actor do?

        As an actor, you will need to:

        • Seek and prepare for auditions
        • Find an agent to represent you and assist in your search for work
        • Memorise lines
        • Rehearse roles
        • Research the context of your production and/or character
        • Discuss interpretation of your character with director
        • Perform for an audience
        • Familiarise yourself with props and costumes
        • Liaise with venue managers
        • Liaise with PR administrators

        You may also need to:

        • Perform in a studio
        • Do voiceovers for adverts or animated films
        • Record auditions to be sent as video files via email

        What hours does an Actor typically do?

        There are no set hours for jobs in acting. Different roles will require different time commitments, e.g. a film project may require night shoots, or a play may be performed in the evening.

        What environment is an Actor based in?

        Actors will often move between different jobs, so it is rare to have a dedicated work space. However, you may find the idea of working in lots of different places exciting.

        How much does an Actor travel?

        You are likely to travel around with this job, e.g. with a travelling theatre company or a television programme that requires filming in several locations

        How much does an Actor get paid?

        A minimum wage for actors is negotiated by Equity, the trade union for professional and other creative workers. The rates are dependent on the type of employment, location and the length of time that the production spans.
