Transport links & getting around

As Portsmouth and Southampton are both port cities, maritime travel away from the mainland is a breeze. You have easy access to France, the Isle of Wight and Spain via regularly running ferries.

Both trains and coaches run from all three of the main cities into London. A train from Portsmouth to London, for example, takes roughly an hour and a half and normally run every half hour. Public transport is of high quality in the region, particularly along the coast.

A car is always a bonus but day to day life in the cities can easily be executed without.

Cost of living here

Being in a desirable coastal location, renting prices aren't the cheapest in Hampshire. The average price to rent a one bedroom property in Hampshire is £669 pcm (per calendar month), increasing to £936 pcm for a two bed.

Of the cities, the cheapest to live in is Southampton. Portsmouth averages out at £930 pcm for a two bedroom property whereas Southampton weighs in at an average of £893 pcm. Winchester tops the list at £1,232 pcm.

Nightlife

If you're in one of the cities you will find all manner of pubs, bars and clubs, with something to tickle everyone's fancy. Portsmouth has a strong live music scene, Guildhall hosts big bands regularly and Wedgewood Rooms has been the launching point for the careers of many big bands.

Cheesy music lovers will no doubt find themselves in the infamous Popworld by the end of the night, and if you like your music ever so slightly more alternative there's Astoria.

Southampton is famously home to a Lord of the Rings-themed bar The Hobbit. Other popular bars you'll want to be hitting are The Spitfire and the Frog and Fargate, otherwise if you're looking for clubs you want Oceania or Switch - brace the wallets though, because it's not cheap.

Notable Attractions

Hampshire really has it all in terms of things to do. Being the former capital of England, Winchester is full of history, not to mention its famous cathedral.

Hampshire port towns have a strong Maritime tradition, every year Southampton hosts The Boat Show and Portsmouth is also the permanent home of the HMS Victory.

Of course you're never short of a beach in Hampshire but they may get a little crowded in high tourist season. The New Forest is a beautiful scenic part of the country, popular with campers and anyone partial to the great outdoors.
