Southampton is the largest city in Hampshire which lies on the South coast of England and has a population of around 254,000. The city is a large port in the country and is a centre of manufacture and tourism. Such a thriving city with international links makes this the perfect place for a postgraduate to settle.
Southampton has a detailed Bus network running both within and outside the city. There are also night buses available on some routes.
The city has its own Southampton Airport, which is easily accessible by train, car and coach and provides the city with international links. The train ride is a short 7 minutes from Southampton Central, by car from the city centre it takes around 17 minutes, and by bus 40 minutes from the Central Station Bus Stop.
Southampton has two rail stations, Southampton Central and Southampton Airport Parkway. Both stations provide links on a National scale and are operated mainly by South Western rail. Other services inluse CrossCountry, Great Western Railway, and Southern (which provides links to Gatwick Airport).
Southampton prides itself as a bike-friendly city with allocated cycle lanes and National Cycle Network Routes.

Southampton is a thriving city with the University of Southampton alone having over 25,000 students. The city prides itself on having a vibrant nightlife suitable for all tastes. Southampton has it all; bars, restaurant, pubs, clubs, theatres and live music venues.
Notable Attractions
Southampton is a city immersed in both historic architecture, such as the Southampton Town Walls, as well as beautiful countryside. The Mayflower theatre is renowned for it excellent performances and regularly hosts touring shows from London, as well as ballets. If you're a football fan, Southampton F.C. is definitely worth a visit. And for cricket lovers, the Ageas Bowl is a fun-packed day out full of good food and drink, located a short free bus ride from Southampton Airport Parkway Rail Station.
The economy in Southampton
A major employer is the city's ports and docks. Southampton is also the location of the HQ of the Maritime and Coastguard agency, as well as Carnival UK and Marine Accident Investigation ( Department for Transport). Other businesses in the city include car manufacture, aircraft manufacture and electrical engineering.
As well as the above there is also a major retail scene in Southampton, with the huge West Quay Shopping Centre providing a lot of employment.
