Unlike London itself, which has way in excess of 8 million residents, the City of London has only around 50,000 - far from being residential, it's right in the metropolis and is made up of glass giants that scrape the inevitable city fog.

Transport links & getting around

Fire up your Oyster cards, it's TFL all the way here. Being part of central London, the main routes of transport are going to be via one of the tube stations in the area; with easy connections through Liverpool Street, Bank and Monument, Barbican and Aldgate to any line on the London Underground. Commuters will often come into London via Waterloo and catch the Waterloo and City directly to Bank. London's buses run regularly 24/7 and are the cheaper way to get around, especially since Sadiq Khan introduced the Hopper. Take it from any Londoner, just “Citymapper it” and you'll have no trouble.

Cost of living here

Unless you're either on the big bucks or enjoy living in relative squalor, you probably won't be living in the Square Mile. If you do want to live in the Square Mile you're looking at an average of £2,142 for a one bedroom property or £2,920 for two bedrooms. Nightlife

Nightlife in The City is catered very much for after work drinks, with a lot of bars being either ghost towns or not open at all Saturday and Sunday. Thursday is the night for after work drinks. You won't find a shortage of places for drinks, but it is certainly not going to be a cheap night. If you're wanting to dance head over to nearby Shoreditch, which has some of the capital's best nightlife. And if it's drunk food you're wanting nothing beats one of the 24-hour bagel shops on Brick Lane.

Notable Attractions

It's the centre of one of the world's most famous cities, so if anything there's too much to do. The original London Wall, the Monument (to the Great Fire of London), St Paul's Cathedral, Mansion House, The Bank of England, the Old Bailey, Smithfield Market, the Gherkin... that's all before you've even really had to look anything up.
