          What does a Counsellor do?

          On a day-to-day basis, a counsellor will:

          • Establish a close relationship with a client
          • Encourage the client to discuss emotional issues
          • Actively listen to client concerns and empathise with their position
          • Accept without bias the issues raised
          • Help clients towards a deeper understanding of root of their concerns
          • Help clients make decisions towards treatment
          • Suggest exercises the client make try to manage issues
          • Refer clients to other sources of help
          • Attend supervision or training courses
          • Undertake personal therapy
          • Liaise with agencies
          • Undertake group as well as individual therapy
          • Keep records and use reporting tools
          What skills and interests should an Counsellor have?

          A counsellor will need some very basic but highly important skills, such as:

          • Good listening and observation skills
          • A non-judgemental outlook
          • Patience, tolerance, and sensitivity
          • An appreciation for confidential issues
          • An optimistic outlook towards client progress
          • Resilience
          What hours does a Counsellor typically do?

          Working hours will typically be 9am - 5pm, Monday to Friday, although some posts may require evening or weekend work.

          What environment is a Counsellor based in?

          Counsellors are usually based in offices but may travel to other locations. Phone and internet counsellor services is a growing industry.

          How much does a Counsellor travel?

          Travel opportunities are limited although you may leave the office on occasions to meet with clients, attend conferences or educational courses.

          How much does a Counsellor get paid?

          Starting salaries for counsellors are usually in the region of £20,000 to £26,000 per annum. With experience and supervisor responsibilities, counsellors can earn around £30,000 to £40,000.

          What qualifications does a Counsellor need?

          A degree is beneficial but not necessary. To become a counsellor, you will typically work through a staged course, often run by organisations such as the British Association for Counsellor and Psychotherapy (BACP), or the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP).

          You will need to undergo disclosure checks if working with children or vulnerable groups.

          Useful subjects to study at school & university

          A degree in subjects such as nursing, psychology, social work or education may be useful in your career and might help you to get onto a counselling course.
