Helping you find a career in the photography industry

It is an understatement to say we're obsessed with images in the 21st Century. They're everywhere - from newspapers and billboards, to art installations and blog posts. A photographer is responsible for photographing the perfect image, for whatever purpose the photograph needs to serve.

Photographers can photograph stunning landscapes, celebrities on a runway, the moment the bride says “I do” at a wedding, or any other image that someone wants to remember. You can travel around the world as a freelancer or work from a studio. You could work for a company, photographing for clients, or you could just do it for the art.

If you're a freelancer you'll need your own equipment, while a studio photographer for a business will often have equipment provided.

Work can be somewhat unstable as you'll usually be working on a short-term project, and will need to find something new once you've finished. Your hours will consequently be flexible, and you'll be very busy some parts of the year.

These days photography is usually profit-orientated, so it is rare that you'll have complete artistic control. One place you might have more artistic freedom is in art galleries, but these positions are rare and competitive. However, working to the specifications of a client can present fun challenges where you'll need to think of creative ways to get across the client's message.

          Skills & interests you'll need

Photography isn't just a matter of picking up a camera and pointing it at stuff. There are techniques and concepts that must be mastered to be a good photographer. You'll also need some technical knowhow about how cameras work - things like lenses, good lighting and depth of field. Luckily, photographers LOVE teaching others about their techniques and there are thousands of books, YouTube videos and courses that can teach you the basics in a fun and easy way. It just takes practice. Get snapping!

You'll also need to be willing to experiment a lot and try new things. Mostly, however, you'll need a good body of work to demonstrate your photographic skills. You'll need to put together a portfolio of your work to demonstrate your talent.

Photographers will photograph a wide range of things. Often, you might be photographing other people, so you'll need good communications skills so you can direct your models and get the picture you need. You'll also want to demonstrate a rapport with clients - that way, they might hire you again!

Technology is always evolving, so it is also important to keep up to date with the latest tech.

These days, photographs are typically edited later using computer software. You'll therefore need to be proficient in software like Adobe Photoshop.

How to get Photography internships, work experience or placements

Most important will be to produce a portfolio of your work. Produce an Instagram account to get your photos out there, and create a professional looking website - this will make you look respectable, and increase the likelihood of securing clients.

You don't need any formal qualifications for a career in photography but it is useful to know some of the basic techniques - start with the rule of thirds or the golden ratio! A GCSE, A level or certificate in art, media studies or design technologies will help with this. Alternatively, there are tonnes of books and online resources to get you started.

Contact local photography agencies and see if you can get some work experience there. This will let you get a feel for the industry and how it works while also providing valuable experience.
